Meet the Axies

Hanzaki Daimyojin (Zaki)

Named after a mythological man-eating salamander, Zaki was my first Axolotl and the inspiration behind this website's name. He's a GFP leucistic and glowed very brightly under blue light! He got sick and passed away 2022 but he's very much alive in my heart <3

Toltec

My second Axolotl is an energetic axanthic with keen hunting instincts. I named him after the the Toltecs, a civilization of people who lived in Mexico before the Aztecs. They likely lived alongside thriving Axolotl populations, a feat which cannot be said for anyone today as Axolotls are endangered in the wild.

What is an Axolotl?

Ambystoma mexicanum

Axolotls are a species of fully aquatic amphibian. Indigenous to only two cold-water lakes near Mexico city, habitat loss has caused a sharp decline in their wild populations. However, they thrive in domestic trade as easy exotic pets. They are also studied in labs for their incredible regenerative abilities. Axolotls are able to regrow almost any part of their body, including their brain! Scientists hope researching them could help develop human regenerative medicine.
